Leather is a robust material, which is why leather-made products are expensive to buy. It is also strong and durable, and if taken care of, it can survive a lifetime. Although sturdy, leather is not invincible and gets damaged when exposed to pet claws or sharp objects. The moment you notice a hole or a puncture in your leather furniture, clothing, or footwear, it must be fixed right away.

The procedure for repairing a torn leather chair differs from that of repairing a handbag. However, you must keep an adhesive or filler handy. On the other hand, if the tear is big enough, it needs to be patched. Make sure that the patch you apply resembles the same texture and color of the leather used in your leather product.

How to Mend a Hole in Leather Furniture?

Follow the below-mentioned steps to repair a hole in leather furniture.

Evaluate the Damage

To begin with, carefully examine the extent of damage. If the hole is a quarter of an inch, it doesn’t require patching. If the hole is slightly bigger, look for a spot from where you can borrow a piece of leather. Normally, the edges bent under the sofa are big enough to be used for mending minor damages. If you can’t find any, consider paying a visit to your local upholstery store.

Fixing Small Holes

If the damage is less than a quarter of an inch, a high-quality adhesive would do. With a fine-quality artist’s brush, dab some adhesive onto the damage. Give it time to dry before you start using that piece of furniture.

Fixing Bigger Holes

If the hole is bigger, cut the edges of the hole with a pair of scissors and make sure the edges are smooth. Now, insert a paper under the hole and flatten it. Using the hole as a stencil, draw out the hole on the paper with a pencil. Extract the paper and cut the outline. Now, use the outline as a template to cut a patch in repair leather. Make sure that the patch is one-inch wider than the damage itself.

The Finishing Touch

Just as you did with the paper, push the patch inside the hole and flatten it. Apply some adhesive to the edges with an artist’s brush. Apply slight pressure with your fingers. Leave the adhesive for a few hours to dry completely.

How to Mend Leather Accessories and Clothing?

  • Evaluate the back of the leather and cut the lining with a utility knife.
  • Get hold of a leather patch that resembles the leather you are trying to mend. The patch should be half-inch bigger than the hole, so it can easily overlap.
  • Apply leather adhesive around the edges and press gently with your fingers.
  • Leave the adhesive to dry for an hour or two, before using it again.

The aforementioned tips will help you mend damages in your leather products, and keep them good as new.
